James P. Garvin

Garvin, who currently is senior consultant to Education Partnerships, Inc., completed his PhD program in 1974 at the University of Massachusetts and subsequently served as chairman of the education department at Gordon College in Massachusetts. While at Gordon, he developed a unique secondary teacher preparation program using 30 local high school teachers as adjunct professors. In 1983, the United States Department of Education invited him to participate in the Blue Ribbon Recognition Program, and he was honored for these efforts at the White House by President Ronald Reagan. In 1989, he was invited to join the Carnegie Corporation to study transition issues in high schools.

Garvin is well known for his efforts in assisting state departments in setting standards and competencies for teacher certification, and he chaired the professional advisory committee that established standards in a variety of teaching fields for the State of Massachusetts. Most recently, he has worked as a consultant in several Fortune 500 business/education partnerships.
